SpaceX is focusing on building a self-growing city on the Moon before moving forward with its long-term Mars plans, according to company founder Elon Musk.
Musk said the Moon project is now a higher priority because it is closer to Earth and easier to reach. A trip to the Moon takes only a few days, while travel to Mars can take months. Launch opportunities to the Moon also happen more often, making it a more practical next step.
The idea of a “self-growing city” means a settlement that can expand on its own over time. Musk explained that early missions would bring basic tools, machines, and robots. These systems would help build more structures, allowing the city to grow without constant supplies from Earth.
Musk believes a lunar city could be developed within the next decade. He said this would help test new technology, train crews, and improve systems needed for living on other planets. The Moon would serve as a testing ground before humans attempt to build a permanent city on Mars.
Mars remains an important goal for SpaceX. Musk has long said he wants humans to become a multi-planet species. However, he admitted that creating a city on Mars will take much longer and face bigger challenges, including distance, limited launch windows, and harsh conditions.
SpaceX is already working on spacecraft designed for deep space travel. These vehicles are expected to play a key role in both lunar and future Mars missions.
The shift in focus marks a change from Musk’s earlier statements, when he described Mars as the main objective. Now, he says the Moon offers a faster and more realistic path forward.
If successful, the lunar city could become the first permanent human settlement beyond Earth and a major step toward future exploration of Mars and beyond.
